A Bit of Concord History

Concord sits on land that was the site of one of California's most consequential Cold War incidents: on July 17, 1944, a massive ammunition explosion at Port Chicago — just north of the city — killed 320 sailors, most of them Black enlisted men assigned to load munitions. When 50 survivors refused to return to the dangerous work, they were court-martialed in what became a landmark civil rights case. Thurgood Marshall personally argued on their behalf. The Port Chicago Naval Magazine National Memorial, still an active munitions facility, quietly marks one of the roots of the modern civil rights movement.
