A Bit of Redwood City History

Redwood City's deepwater channel made it the Peninsula's first real city — and for a time, its most important port. Founded in 1851, it grew up around a wharf where redwood logs cut from the Santa Cruz Mountains were loaded onto schooners bound for San Francisco. That same lumber rebuilt San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake, shipped out through the Port of Redwood City — still one of the only deepwater ports on the Bay south of San Francisco. The city was the first in San Mateo County to incorporate, in 1867, and has served as the county seat ever since. Its old slogan, picked in the 1920s from a Chamber of Commerce contest and later backed by a pre-war federal climate study, still spans the downtown arches: 'Climate Best by Government Test.'
