San Jose is older than the state it helped create. Founded on November 29, 1777 as El Pueblo de San José de Guadalupe, it was California's first civilian settlement — a farming community established to feed the nearby missions and presidios. When the U.S. military occupied California in 1846, San Jose became the first capital of the new state, hosting the first two legislative sessions in 1849–1851 in a hastily built adobe structure that legislators complained leaked in the rain. Long before silicon, the city's fortune rested underground: the New Almaden mercury mine, discovered in 1845 in the hills south of town, was the most valuable mine in California before the Gold Rush — and the mercury it produced was essential to extracting gold from ore across the West.
